Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats (SWOT) Analysis A SWOT Analysis is a valuable business tool used to evaluate a company’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. Team BEHS conducted an internal analysis (strengths and weaknesses) of costs, finances, market share and resources available based on the financial data provided by CanGo. Thorough evaluation was performed to determine if the organization can has the resources to move into new markets and provide a justification by an operational cost analysis. Coordination with the operational, accounting and financial management teams was leveraged in order to build a unified consensus for implementing a strategy for moving into the online gaming market or perhaps some other market less risky. Further analysis was able to identify significant Threats (risks) and discuss the best courses of action to mitigate them. An external analysis (opportunities and threats) was also performed on the online gaming market. According to a leading market research company, a recent report has stated that online gaming participation has increased 10 percent since 2009, and the number of digital downloads for games has increased 20 percent. Every year there is significant growth. CanGo’s marketing ideas have valid merit and present an excellent opportunity for future company expansion. Today’s gamers include millions of Americans of all ages and backgrounds. In fact, more than two-thirds of all American households play games. This vast audience is fueling the growth of this multi-billion dollar industry and bringing jobs to communities across the nation (Horston, 2010). The U. S. Video Gaming Market recorded a record $5. 53 Billion in the month of December 2009. Meanwhile, the online gaming market has emerged as the most dynamic and transforming segment of the overall gaming industry in China. It has been witnessing a series of developments driven by increasing Internet and broadband penetration, double-digit growth in the number of online gaming users, rapid product development and commercialization. (RNCOS, 2009) Research was also conducted with online gaming hardware and the statistics state that 85% of users prefer the PC. Among non-PC systems, the Xbox 360 dominated for the third year in a row as the top system for online gaming with 48% of the market. Interestingly, the Wii and the PS3 are in a near tie, with about 30 percent of online gamers reporting that they use both systems. However, it is important to point out that the PS3 increased 10 percentage points since last year. The average hours per week breakdown with the top three systems are the Xbox 360 (7. 3 hrs), PC (6. 6 hrs) and PS3 (5. 8 hrs) (Riley, 2010). â€Å"The number of online gaming paid subscribers, which totaled 19. 4 million at the end of last year, and will more than double to 44. 5 million by the end of 2014. The increase in usage will be driven by the rise in digital distribution of online games as opposed to retail boxed sales, along with an increase in broadband adoption† (Sachoff, 2010). Competitive Analysis Competition in this industry will be fierce as there are numerous companies providing online gaming services. With an estimated $5 billion in revenue in game subscription by 2015, the return on investment will be very profitable and a further testimony to the large market for online gaming (Sachoff, 2010). Online gaming service providers offer game downloads, free online game play, online gamer community chat rooms, club memberships, prizes for playing, games, and links to the other popular online games. To be competitive, CanGo should provide these services as a basic subscription package. Technology is about progression, and online gaming technology is no exception. Our research has indicated that a 3D gaming platform will outperform the conventional 2D platforms currently being used by the industry. 3D technology provides users the capability to view images in dimensional realism. 2D gaming only allows the consumer to view the image of an object in one view with a flat surface. Throughout the history of 3D rendering technology, you will notice that the 3d render has more ability to create higher quality rendered models, shadows, and light than the real time render used in 3d game industry. The main reason is that the real time render depends on the computer display card capabilities (www. graphicmania. net). With today’s technology, computer display hardware allows creating higher quality 3D games with semi-real objects and scenes. In our assessment CanGo would be prudent to implement the 3D gaming system. There are technological requirements that must be considered such as bandwidth allocation and network and physical security measures. The cost of a high quality 3D gaming system will far exceed those of the standard 2D gaming system. BEHS evaluated the associated risks and added cost of a 3D gaming platform and consider them as solid returns on investment. A 3D online gaming system is a concrete opportunity for CanGo’s expansion efforts to carve out a point of difference in the marketplace. CanGo’s mission is to create a market that will not only meet but exceed customer expectations, as such CanGo must carry out as the top online gaming company and one in which customers will use for service. We developed an extensive analysis of alternatives (AoA) (four different options), then selected the one that best meets the desired goals of CanGo, based on variety of input factors. The baseline used was predicated on the services offered by the main competitors in the industry; with the intended resolution being CanGo providing its customer base with unique and exciting gaming experience. Team BEHS reviewed industry standards and conducted surveys of avid online gaming participants and developed a combination of the latest technologies as seen in Table 2. Our Analysis showed Sony to be the only competitor with Cross-game Voice Chat, while no other company provided â€Å"iChat-like† video Capabilities. Cross-game Voice Chat allows users to chat with their opponents from their gaming console’s internet connection while playing the online game. Mind you, this is strictly a voice capability. What will set CanGo apart from the competition is the use of iChat-like video conferencing and chat tool (much like Oovoo or Skype) for Windows, loaded with useful, powerful tools that make it a viable alternative for small work groups using conference calls and screen-sharing applications. (Rosenblatt, 2008) Our research has shown this technology is now mature enough to make the transition into the video gaming arena. This service can make CanGo the leader in the market because others currently do not have this feature available. This alone should generate enough revenue for CanGo to be prosperous for many years. Table 2: Capabilities Assessment Financial Analysis CanGo announced October sales are expected to increase 500% and addressed needs to immediately find ways to accommodate more personnel, trucks, warehouse space, shipping receiving and implementing truck satellite tracking technology. More resources and finances are required from CanGo, which will affect the online gaming effort. The IPO is expected to bring in $130,000,000 in revenue. This funding can propel CanGo to a new echelon. CanGo’s financial pricing objectives should strategically aim to achieve  profitability by the second year of introducing the gaming products. According to entertainment media industry analyst Wanda Meloni, â€Å"previous console development has been between $3 5 million per platform. She estimates that the average cost of making one game for one platform is $10 million while multiplatform releases clock in at $18 $28 million. † (Glasser, 2010) An important aspect for CanGo to consider in entering the gaming market is developing games for Facebook, the iPhone and other social media or mobile gaming platforms because it is far cheaper thanks to lower production costs. The cost of developing social media/casual games is estimated at $30,000 $300,000 in a six month development cycle and mobile/iPhone games at $5,000 $20,000 thousand with four months of development. (Glasser, 2010) More developers are expected to streamline development, and switch up distribution models for ways to include micro-transactions. The key word for CanGo is to focus on Return-On- Investment (ROI). CanGo should consider web driven flash games that takes 3 to 5 developers approximately 6 weeks to roll out a new game at a cost of about $25-50K. Leasing server bandwidth costs approximately $3. 50 to $5. 50 per Gigabit of throughput depending on the vendor and traffic location. Principle of Uberrimae fidei (Utmost Good Faith) Principle of Uberrimae fidei (a Latin phrase), or in simple english words, the Principle of Utmost Good Faith, is a very basic and first primary principle of insurance. According to this principle, the insurance contract must be signed by both parties (i.e insurer and insured) in an absolute good faith or belief or trust. The person getting insured must willingly disclose and surrender to the insurer his complete true information regarding the subject matter of insurance. The insurers liability gets void (i.e legally revoked or cancelled) if any facts, about the subject matter of insurance are either omitted, hidden, falsified or presented in a wrong manner by the insured. The principle of Uberrimae fidei applies to all types of insurance contracts. 2. Principle of Insurable Interest The principle of insurable interest states that the person getting insured must have insurable interest in the object of insurance. A person has an insurable interest when the physical existence of the insured object gives him some gain but its non-existence will give him a loss. In simple words, the insured person must suffer some financial loss by the damage of the insured object. For example :- The owner of a taxicab has insurable interest in the taxicab because he is getting income from it. But, if he sells it, he will not have an insurable interest left in that taxicab. From above example, we can conclude that, ownership plays a very crucial role in evaluating insurable interest. Every person has an insurable interest in his own life. A merchant has insurable interest in his business of trading. Similarly, a creditor has insurable interest in his debtor. 3. Principle of Indemnity Indemnity means security, protection and compensation given against damage, loss or injury. According to the principle of indemnity, an insurance contract is signed only for getting protection against unpredicted financial losses arising due to future uncertainties. Insurance contract is not made for making profit else its sole purpose is to give compensation in case of any damage or loss. In an insurance contract, the amount of compensations paid is in proportion to the incurred losses. The amount of compensations is limited to the amount assured or the actual losses, whichever is less. The compensation must not be less or more than the actual damage. Compensation is not paid if the specified loss does not happen due to a particular reason during a specific time period. Thus, insurance is only for giving protection against losses and not for making profit. However, in case of life insurance, the principle of indemnity does not apply because the value of human life cannot be measured in terms of money. 4. Principle of Contribution Principle of Contribution is a corollary of the principle of indemnity. It applies to all contracts of indemnity, if the insured has taken out more than one policy on the same subject matter. According to this principle, the insured can claim the compensation only to the extent of actual loss either from all insurers or from any one insurer. If one insurer pays full compensation then that insurer can claim proportionate claim from the other insurers. For example :- Mr. John insures his property worth $ 100,000 with two insurers AIG Ltd. for $ 90,000 and MetLife Ltd. for $ 60,000. Johns actual property destroyed is worth $ 60,000, then Mr. John can claim the full loss of $ 60,000 either from AIG Ltd. or MetLife Ltd., or he can claim $ 36,000 from AIG Ltd. and $ 24,000 from Metlife Ltd. So, if the insured claims full amount of compensation from one insurer then he cannot claim the same compensation from other insurer and make a profit. Secondly, if one insurance company pays the full c ompensation then it can recover the proportionate contribution from the other insurance company. 5. Principle of Subrogation Subrogation means substituting one creditor for another. Principle of Subrogation is an extension and another corollary of the principle of indemnity. It also applies to all contracts of indemnity. According to the principle of subrogation, when the insured is compensated for the losses due to damage to his insured property, then the ownership right of such property shifts to the insurer. This principle is applicable only when the damaged property has any value after the event causing the damage. The insurer can benefit out of subrogation rights only to the extent of the amount he has paid to the insured as compensation. For example :- Mr. John insures his house for $ 1 million. The house is totally destroyed by the negligence of his neighbour Mr.Tom. The insurance company shall settle the claim of Mr. John for $ 1 million. At the same time, it can file a law suit against Mr.Tom for $ 1.2 million, the market value of the house. If insurance company wins the case and collects $ 1.2 mi llion from Mr. Tom, then the insurance company will retain $ 1 million (which it has already paid to Mr. John) plus other expenses such as court fees. The balance amount, if any will be given to Mr. John, the insured. 6. Principle of Loss Minimization According to the Principle of Loss Minimization, insured must always try his level best to minimize the loss of his insured property, in case of uncertain events like a fire outbreak or blast, etc. The insured must take all possible measures and necessary steps to control and reduce the losses in such a scenario. The insured must not neglect and behave irresponsibly during such events just because the property is insured. Hence it is a responsibility of the insured to protect his insured property and avoid further losses. For example :- Assume, Mr. Johns house is set on fire due to an electric short-circuit. In this tragic scenario, Mr. John must try his level best to stop fire by all possible means, like first calling nearest fire department office, asking neighbours for emergency fire extinguishers, etc. He must not remain inactive and watch his house burning hoping, Why should I worry? Ive insured my house. 7. Principle of Causa Proxima (Nearest Cause) Principle of Causa Proxima (a Latin phrase), or in simple english words, the Principle of Proximate (i.e Nearest) Cause, means when a loss is caused by more than one causes, the proximate or the nearest or the closest cause should be taken into consideration to decide the liability of the insurer. The principle states that to find out whether the insurer is liable for the loss or not, the proximate (closest) and not the remote (farest) must be looked into. For example :- A cargo ships base was punctured due to rats and so sea water entered and cargo was damaged. Here there are two causes for the damage of the cargo ship (i) The cargo ship getting punctured beacuse of rats, and (ii) The sea water entering ship through puncture. The risk of sea water is insured but the first cause is not. The nearest cause of damage is sea water which is insured and therefore the insurer must pay the compensation. However, in case of life insurance, the principle of Causa Proxima does not apply. Whatever may be the reason of death (whether a natural death or an unnatural death) the insurer is liable to pay the amount of insurance.

If philosophy is the place where the question is radical, then the task of the philosophy of education is to turn education into a problem through the practice of criticism. If man, as psychoanalysis indicates, is constituted as a desirous being, learning is possible only if desire is present. This interweaving of philosophy and psychoanalysis leads us to consider the impossibility of education in terms of three questions. Not only was he lonely from leaving everyone he knew behind; he never got the sense of belonging in Canada even after working hard, â€Å"They are not citizens and they do not vote, so, like the ge neration before them who died, weathered and forgotten, on the cold rail lines, their suffering is barely noticed† (Lee 44). For Pon Man, leaving home wasn’t a choice; rather it was imposed on him by his parents. Even though it wasn’t his preference, he had high ambitions and expectations from Vancouver, Canada. On the contrary, his dreams start to tremble since the very first day as he says to his father, â€Å"I don’t see anything worth money here, just a room we have to share.† Disregarding the fact that Pon Man grew a teenager without even seeing his dad, he did not like his father for plenty of other reasons. He’s your father and deserves your obedience.† (Lee 80) Thus, leaving home for Pon Man not only meant leaving China where he lived for the first fifteen years of his life but also breaking free from the invisible shackles that bound his dreams and ambitions to his father. Home for Samantha was something she was frightened of, as she says, â€Å"But really I am simply afraid†¦ with my mother’s footsteps coming up quick behind me, I know that I have irrevocably returned† (Lee 3). Samantha’s mother Siu Sang was very controlling of her daughters and would expect nothing but perfection as it is evident when she starts throwing the dishes (with the smallest speck of g rease) just cleaned by her young daughters. She was obligated to listen to everything her mom asks, especially coming from a Chinese background. For a period of six years she had enjoyed the freedom from her family, escaping to Montreal for studying. However she had to sacrifice her freedom and come back due to her elder sister, Penny, getting married. She looks at Penny’s face and observes, â€Å"†¦ the loosening of the muscles around her eyes and mouth. I wonder if I looked the same when I left Vancouver for Montreal six years ago, delirious with the kind of happiness only escape can bring.† (Lee 6) She realizes that her obligations for her family have made her come back to the very place which she thought she has left for good. Conversely, this time around she is certain that she will never be able to leave her responsibility as the youngest daughter, taking care of her aging mother as she says, â€Å"†¦ they all left, gradually, one after the other. Somehow, it never occurred to me that, in the end , I would be the only one still here.† (Lee 62). Thus, leaving home for her meant escaping from Vancouver, escaping from her mother – towards her freedom. Leaving home for Seid Quan and Pon Man meant similar sacrifices and obligations; however, the small differences in their ideologies created a massive communication gap between the father and son. As Seid Quan tries to make his son understand the reason for coming to Canada, he elaborates saying, â€Å"There’s no money to be made in the village, just remember that† (Lee 74). He explains the hardships back home and the importance of money. However, he contradicts himself by saying, â€Å"It’s not about expensive things. It’s about hard work and saving and supporting a family† (Lee 74). Even after working in Vancouver’s Chinatown for many years, Seid Quan wonders, â€Å"if he will ever go home for good, or if he will always be stuck in this land that shimmers with rain and is not quite dream, not quite day.† (Lee 39) He wants t o go back home but again he thinks of bringing his family over as he says, â€Å"†¦we could have built something here, lived in a house, walked through Stanley Park together.† (Lee 45) Regardless of their differences, Pon Man was like his father in a few ways, always thinking dually and that life in China was better. For example after observing the place where him and his father will be staying he says, â€Å"Our house in the village was nicer, and it didn’t smell so mouldy.† (Lee 74) He also reflects that everyone, like him, wants to escape this city, for despite the trees and mountains and pure water, Vancouver is as cold and hard at its core as anywhere else in Canada. Even though he thinks of going back and the harsh conditions life threw at him, he stays in Canada, works hard in the morning and studies in evening to become an accountant, in which he finally succeeds and moves out of Chinatown. Both father and son lived their lives in parallel lines; however they could not communicate to each other as Shew Lin, wife of Seid Quan says, â€Å"her son and husband, two men who have barely said a dozen words to each other in the last year†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Lee 166). They never learnt to express their feelings and had to keep their inner desires hidden, unspoken, forgotten but not forgi ven. It is apparent, when Pon Man thinks he needs to be forgiven by his father, whom he despised all throughout his life, â€Å"†¦ he knows he needs to be forgiven for something, but what?† (Lee 218). In addition, Seid Quan also wanted something similar as he thought, â€Å"it was beyond him, to imagine the things he would want to say to his son, the kinds of things, he would want to ask forgiveness for (Lee 239). Thus, the very notion of cognitive dissonance is vivid throughout both their lives. On the other hand Seid Quan barely spoke with his youngest granddaughter Samantha; not because of their gap in generation but rather less because both of them were not the talkative type. After all it is repeated over and over again, how less they speak about something that actually matters as it would not make any difference to what will actually happen. It always came down to what was needed; not for the individual but for the entire family. Besides their unspoken similarities, both shared an unbound connection to their birthplace. Seid Quan always wanted to go back to China after his debts were paid off instead of bringing the family over and Samantha always wanted to leave Vancouver but leaving this place was like leaving herself. (Lee 11). In addition, it was through finding of Seid Quan’s cigarette tin, Samantha unearth a lot about her grandfather as she found the Head Tax certificate (Lee 5). Both Pon Man and Samantha take defiance as their only way to revolt against their over controlled lives. Pon Man disobeys Seid Quan and goes smoking with his high school friends (Lee 81) and Samantha defies her mother by going around and having rough consensual intercourse casually. However, both father and daughter pay a price for their defiance. Pon Man gets cancer from smoking which leads to his death and Samantha wakes up from a night’s sexual encounter with a pool of blood on her bed and a visit to the hospital (Lee 154,180). Maybe it was karma or just a co-incidence but nonetheless they both had to pay for their actions. The very essence of cognitive dissonance is prominent between Seid Quan, Pon Man and Samantha in Jen Sookfong Lee’s The End of the East. Duality guided their daily lives, always having to surrender their inner desires to meet the obligations required by their family. The rain becomes visible as it replaces David's face in a fade technique, and David enters the frame and walks from the right of the screen to its left, suggesting change and action. He arrives at a restaurant window, peers in, and falls into a strange conversation with the employees. This is now the chronological middle of the story, and, while common in Medieval literature, is a highly unorthodox place to begin a picture. According to reports, more than sev en hundred people are killed on annual basis due to the arson crime; the crime is responsible for causing damage to more than hundred thousand buildings, and cost loss of more than a billion dollar annually (Larry, 2006).According to Mr. Carrey Brown, U.S. Fire Administrator, 'there are, however, effective ways citizens, along with law enforcement and the fire service, can ensure the culprits are brought to justice' (Barry, 2004), thus the solution to the crimes associated with the arson can be rectified through proactive role and crucial efforts of the law enforcement agencies. The different forms taken by the Arson include, 'juvenile fire setting, vandalism, pyromania, a murder weapon, and concealment of a crime' (Barry, 2004), and the elimination of the problem is achievable through identification of the right faces of the arson. According to United States based national arson expert and chief of arson, Detroit Fire Department, Mr. Charles Evancho, 'Arson is one of the most diffi cult crimes to prosecute successfully. Often the criminal justice system does not view arson as a serious crime. The challenge is to develop sentencing for adults and juveniles' (Barry, 2004). The government agencies have launched several financial schemes which focus upon the financial provisions for the elimination of the arson. The United States government based agency provided '$2 million to 12 states to develop anti-arson programs' (Barry, 2004). The institutions have been established for the rehabilitation of the youth, with no parents and guardians. Recently 'USFA granted financial support a juvenile fire setter prevention program in partnership with a treatment center for abused children, the plan was implemented in Colorado. The intellectuals are of the opinion that public and private funding and participation is required to continue with such schemes, and it is important to realize that arson has to be controlled and handled 'several fronts and people must protect themselv es by strengthening prevention and apprehension efforts' (Barry, 2004). Arson is regarded as the 'second leading cause of residential fire deaths and accounts for approximately quarter of the fires incidents reported in the United States' (Barry, 2004), the crime shares one fifth of the damaged property in United States. According to reports, the crime claimed more than seven hundred lives on annual basis, and more than half a million fire incidents related to arson are reported. Only fifteen percent of the cases were able to reach conclusive stage where the arrests are made.
